The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an international assessment that measures the performance of students in mathematics and science at the fourth and eighth grades. TIMSS is administered every four years, and the next assessment will be conducted in 2024.

This article provides an overview of the TIMSS 2024 assessment, with a particular focus on the perspectives of countries in the Dinaric region. The Dinaric region is a geographic area that includes Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia.

TIMSS 2024 Assessment Overview

TIMSS 2024 will be administered to students in over 60 countries around the world. The assessment will measure students’ performance in mathematics and science, and it will also collect data on students’ attitudes towards mathematics and science.

The TIMSS 2024 assessment framework is based on the following four content domains:

  • Number: This domain assesses students’ understanding of numbers, operations, and relationships.
  • Measurement: This domain assesses students’ understanding of measurement concepts and skills.
  • Geometry: This domain assesses students’ understanding of geometric shapes and properties.
  • Data: This domain assesses students’ ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data.

In addition to the content domains, TIMSS 2024 will also assess students’ performance on a number of cognitive skills, such as:

  • Reasoning: This skill assesses students’ ability to apply logical thinking to solve problems.
  • Communication: This skill assesses students’ ability to communicate their mathematical and scientific ideas effectively.
  • Problem-solving: This skill assesses students’ ability to solve real-world problems using mathematics and science.

Dinaric Perspectives on TIMSS 2024

The Dinaric region is a diverse region with a variety of educational systems. However, there are some common challenges that many countries in the region face, such as:

  • Limited access to quality education: In some countries in the Dinaric region, students do not have access to quality education, which can impact their performance on TIMSS.
  • Lack of qualified teachers: Many countries in the Dinaric region face a shortage of qualified mathematics and science teachers, which can also impact student performance.
  • Negative attitudes towards mathematics and science: In some countries in the Dinaric region, students have negative attitudes towards mathematics and science, which can also impact their performance on TIMSS.

Despite these challenges, there are also a number of opportunities for countries in the Dinaric region to improve their performance on TIMSS 2024. These opportunities include:

  • Improving access to quality education: Countries in the Dinaric region can improve their performance on TIMSS 2024 by increasing access to quality education for all students. This can be done by building new schools, providing scholarships, and training teachers.
  • Increasing the number of qualified teachers: Countries in the Dinaric region can improve their performance on TIMSS 2024 by increasing the number of qualified mathematics and science teachers. This can be done by providing teacher training programs and by offering incentives to teachers to work in rural areas.
  • Changing attitudes towards mathematics and science: Countries in the Dinaric region can improve their performance on TIMSS 2024 by changing attitudes towards mathematics and science. This can be done by providing students with positive experiences in mathematics and science and by showing them how mathematics and science can be used to solve real-world problems.

TIMSS 2024 is an important assessment that can provide valuable insights into the mathematics and science education of students in the Dinaric region. By understanding the challenges and opportunities that countries in the region face, we can work together to improve educational outcomes for all students.
