Urnabhih Chanakya Scribe Samuel Butler was a British author, scholar, and translator who lived in the 19th century. He is best known for his translation of the ancient Indian text, the Arthashastra, which is attributed to the legendary Indian statesman and philosopher, Chanakya.
Butler was born in Langar, Nottinghamshire, England, in 1835. He studied at St John's College, Cambridge, where he excelled in classics and mathematics. After graduating, he worked as a clerk in the India Office in London. In 1862, he published his first book, The Iliad of Homer Rendered into English Blank Verse.
In 1867, Butler was appointed as a professor of classics at King's College London. He taught at King's College for the next 20 years, during which time he published a number of important works, including The Authoress of the Odyssey (1897) and The Way of All Flesh (1903).
In 1888, Butler published his translation of the Arthashastra. The Arthashastra is a Sanskrit text that is believed to have been written by Chanakya in the 4th century BC. The text is a treatise on statecraft and economics, and it is considered to be one of the most important works of ancient Indian literature.
Butler's translation of the Arthashastra was the first complete English translation of the text. It was a major scholarly achievement, and it helped to introduce the Arthashastra to a wider audience.
